The Green Labs Initiative is co-lead by EHS and the Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) and aims to empower Georgia Tech to optimize resources and facilitate the integration of sustainable practices, while maintaining the highest safety standards.
In order to develop a comprehensive Green Labs Program for campus, three Working Groups were created as a result of two strategic planning sessions held with campus stakeholders in October and December of 2017. Each Working Group is tasked to address a strategic initiative and is comprised of representatives from EHS, OCS, researchers, students and leaders in the College of Sciences and College of Engineering:
- Creating a standard Georgia Tech Green Lab definition
- Developing infrastructure for lab recycling, reuse and waste reduction
- Creating a system for the collection and reuse of unopened laboratory chemicals
So far, the Georgia Tech Green Labs have piloted a glove recycling program, a “Shut the Sash” program for chemical fume hoods and a Sustainability in Research Lab Seminar. Members of the Green Labs group have also volunteered as members of the planning committee for the CSHEMA Symposium for Safety Culture in Makerspaces and Campus Sustainability which will be hosted at Georgia Tech in the Student Center November 13-14, 2018.
