It is imperative that all biohazard incidents are reported to the Biosafety Officer as soon as possible.  This ensures that individuals involved in the incident receive appropriate medical treatment (if necessary), regulatory reporting requirements are met, and corrective actions are implemented to reduce the risk of future incidences occurring at Georgia Tech.  Click below based on the type of emergency you are responding to.

 

Biological Spills

Many factors should be considered when assessing the severity of a spill including volume, infectious dose, location, and potential for aerosolization.

  • Major Spill:  More than 10ml or with considerable splashing
  • Minor Spill: Less than 10 ml with no splashing

When spills occur inside of a biosafety cabinet (BSC), the cleanup is much easier because the BSC works to contain aerosols that were generated during the spill.

 

Biological Exposure

In the event that you have an exposure to biological/infectious material, do the following IMMEDIATELY:

HideAbsorption (Skin or Occular Exposure)

1. Flush eyes or skin immediately with clean water, saline, or sterile wash

2. Report the exposure to your supervisor and call the EHS Emergency Phone (404-216-5237) or GT Police (404-894-2500) 

3. Seek medical attention if necessary

HideNeedlestick/Animal Bite

1. Wash injury with soap and warm water

2. Report the exposure to your supervisor and call the EHS Emergency Phone (404-216-5237). 

3. Seek medical attention if necessary
