Christina talking to ANS about what ORS does Gary and others at the Laser Pointer Workshop

American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Chapter

The student chapter of ANS invited ORS to its monthly meeting to give an overview of its operations and how it integrates into campus activities. ORS also provides radiation detectors and consumer products containing radioactive material to ANS for their demonstration tables.

Freshman Honors Chemistry lecture

ORS was asked to participate in a session focused on ionizing radiation as well as classroom discussion of nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty verification. Students were introduced to different radiation survey meter types, including one with an isotope identification library geared towards nuclear non-proliferation testing. Assistance was also provided for the laboratory exercises using low activity radiation sources.

Laser pointer testing workshop

A workshop was held at the Student Center to test the actual power on laser pointers. Individuals brought their laser pointers (personal or work provided) for testing by the Laser Safety Officer and members of the Laser Safety Committee. The FDA has identified a recurring problem of cheaper laser pointers putting out higher power than they are rated for.

Boy Scouts of America Nuclear Science Merit Badge workshop

The Nuclear Engineering Department and the ANS Student Chapter offer workshops that allow Boy Scouts to learn about nuclear science and to complete the requirements for that merit badge. ORS provides equipment, sources, and radiological protection support for this activity.
