fume hood with experiment running

Sometimes it is necessary for experimental apparatus to be left unattended. While this is not an optimal condition, EHS understands that some procedures need to run overnight or the researcher has to leave the lab.

When no one present in the lab is knowledgeable of the experiment and its hazards, it is critical that a Reaction Underway Form be completed and posted at the main entrance to the experimental area, or on the sash of the fume hood. This form is available here.

Crucial information needed on the form is the types of hazards present, how to safety shut down the experiment in case of an emergency, and contact information. Other lab members should also be made aware of experiment conditions so they can assist GTPD, Atlanta Fire, or EHS during a response. Not all experiments can be left unattended due to their highly hazardous nature and EHS should be consulted.

EHS has responded numerous times to unattended experiments gone wrong, with connections getting loose, unexpected off gassing of chemicals, and other unforeseen events. Having the form completed and posted greatly assists in a more efficient and time effective response, and a safe shut down of the experiment, which is better for the research.
