Lab Coat Dos and Don’ts

  • Must be worn while handling chemicals, biological or radioactive materials.
  • Must be in good condition and reasonably clean so that it does not create hazard.
  • Should be buttoned up and cover the wearer to the knees.
  • Do not wear lab coats outside of the laboratory:
    • Remove lab coat before leaving the laboratory to go to the restroom or anywhere else.
    • Do not take lab coats home.
  • Do not clean lab coats at home or at a laundromat.
    • Some labs at GT use a uniform service to both supply and launder lab coats. Contact GA Tech EHS (404-894-4635) for more information about this service.

When to Use

 

 

Cotton

 

 

For general lab use, select a poly-cotton blend. When conducting work with open flames select 100% cotton.

 

 

Disposable

 

These are disposed of after use or when they are dirty.

  • Use appropriate disposal method (contact EHS for more information regarding proper disposal method).
  • Lab coat materials may vary. Contact EHS for more information regarding suitability.

 

 

Nomex

 

 

These are flame resistant lab coats and commonly used in labs with pyrophoric chemicals.
